Students support Spence

April 1, 2008

State Auditor spokesman Sean Spence’s campaign for state representative of Missouri’s 25th district has attracted the support of student leaders in Columbia. The 25th district encompasses Columbia’s universities, including MU.

“Sean is a great candidate and a great friend of the University of Missouri,” College Democrats of Missouri President Nate Kennedy said. “He has many years of experience working in politics, at the capital and on campaigns. He knows every last detail of every single issue and would make a great legislator for Columbia and Boone County.”

Kennedy, along with fellow MU student and Young Democrats of Missouri President Rick Puig, both personally endorsed Spence last week. The students’ endorsements do not speak on behalf of their respective organizations.

“One of the key ingredients if you are a candidate is going out there and having face to face contact with young voters,” Puig said. “Without a doubt Spence has been the candidate to do this.”

Spence has garnered the endorsements of Stephens College Democrats President Katie Nicholson and Columbia College College Democrats President Craig Rush.

“Sean has really reached out to students at all three schools and has helped us in our endeavors statewide,” Kennedy said. “He has really gotten to know his student constituents and that is why I think so many students support him.”

Puig said Spence, an MU graduate, has connected with his constituents more than any other candidate.

“One of the most important things about being a legislator is knowing your constituents and working hard to really understand your constituents,” Puig said. “Spence has been the candidate to do this all along, which has really helped him gain support in the race.”

Puig said it would be beneficial to MU if Spence were elected to the 25th district House seat.

“I think he understands the university is the greatest economic driver in the state of Missouri,” Puig said. “I believe he’ll do things to help the university continue to thrive.”

Spence is one of three Democrats running to fill the House seat left by Rep. Judy Baker, D-Columbia. Mary Still, a former communications director for Attorney General Jay Nixon, and peer counselor and patient advocate Bob Pund are also running for the seat as Democrats, and Navy Reserve intelligence officer Ryan Asbridge is running as a Republican.

Kennedy said the three Democratic candidates provide good options for voters.

“There are three great candidates in the race,” he said. “Of course, I hope Sean is the winner but either way I think we will end up with a good representative for Missouri.”
