Fraternity does not appeal org. status loss

The chapter is undergoing an investigation.

A sanction removing Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s status as an official student organization went into effect last week after the fraternity didn’t appeal the sanction.

On April 3, Student Life Director Mark Lucas sent a letter to Sigma Alpha Epsilon President Chris Lupo revoking the fraternity’s status, effective immediately.

The chapter had until 5 p.m. Wednesday to appeal the sanction.

The MU chapter of the fraternity is also undergoing an investigation by its national headquarters.

Brandon Weghorst, Sigma Alpha Epsilon National Headquarters Spokesman, said the national organization’s investigation is separate from the MU Student Life investigation.

“They still have a charter,” he said. “It’s still a chapter. They freeze in time while we look at the case.”

Weghorst said the chapter was placed under a “cease and desist” order, which he said was a technical term for halting chapter operations.

“They’re not allowed to do any of the normal things chapters do while we investigate,” he said. “The board of directors is evaluating based on the information provided to us by the University of Missouri.”

Weghorst said the board hopes to complete the investigation before the end of the school year.

“When we complete our investigation, the board of directors will make a decision,” Weghorst said.

He said the board would likely reach one of three conclusions: that the MU chapter will still be recognized by the national headquarters; that the chapter will be put on alumni commission, a type of probation where the chapter would have to make all of its decisions through alumni; or the national headquarters could suspend the MU chapter’s charter.

“This chapter is a historic chapter,” he said. “We’ve been at the University of Missouri for some time. We have an interest in keeping the charter, but also in doing what’s best for all parties involved.”

Weghorst said the chapter makes the decision whether or not to appeal the Student Life sanction on its own.

Weghorst said the national headquarters doesn’t have a say in the chapter’s house or property on East Stewart Road.

Lupo could not be reached for comment.
