Softball gets a split
The MU softball team split a two-game set this weekend at Texas.
On Saturday, Texas pitcher Megan Denny pitched a no-hitter through the first six innings.
Freshman center fielder Rhea Taylor broke up the no-hitter in the seventh inning, and the Tigers scored one run.
It wasn’t enough, as Texas won the game 6-1.
Sunday, Taylor stole three bases. That increases her season total to 48, setting a new single-season Missouri record.
MU junior Stacy Delaney matched Denny’s performance from the day before, giving up two hits and one run in her outing, leading MU to a 4-1 win over the Longhorns.
With 48 steals, Taylor is within 13 steals of being in the top 10 in the MU career record books. Former Tiger Julie Link has the career record with 110 steals.
Delaney improved her record to 16-3 in 24 starts. The win was the Tigers’ first Big 12 road-win of the season.
The team has a 7-5 Big 12 record and a 40-13 overall record. The team returns to action Wednesday with a doubleheader at home against Iowa State beginning at 2 p.m.
Baseball wins series
The baseball team took two out of three from Oklahoma this weekend on the road.
Friday night, junior Aaron Crow threw 7.2 innings, giving up eight hits and four runs. The Sooners struck first and took a 4-1 lead, but Missouri responded with eight unanswered runs to win the game 9-4. Sophomore Greg Folgia was 3-5 and had a career-high four RBI’s.
It took extra innings for the Tigers to take their second win of the weekend on Saturday.
Junior Steve Gray finished up his 3-5 day with an RBI double in the top of the 10th inning to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead.
Freshman Nick Tepesch held the Sooners scoreless in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Tigers the win.
Sophomore Kyle Gibson went seven innings for the Tigers, giving up 11 hits and five runs, all earned.
Sunday didn’t go as well for Missouri. MU lost the game 22-4.
It ended after only seven innings per Big 12 rules since it was the last day of the conference series.
MU scored the first run of the game when sophomore Aaron Senne singled in Folgia in the top of the first inning, but the Sooners responded with three in the bottom of the first inning. Oklahoma scored runs in every inning except the sixth.
The Sooners scored six runs in the second and fourth innings and five in the third inning.
Junior Ian Berger started the game for the Tigers. He didn’t record an out in the second inning, giving up seven hits and seven earned runs in his one-inning plus of work.
MU is 9-6 in Big 12 play and 28-10 overall.
The team has a two-game set in O’Fallon this week.
It will face Eastern Illinois on Tuesday night and Southern Illinois on Wednesday night.
Both games will start at 6:30 p.m.
