Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity celebrated Sunday night outside Jesse Hall after they were named champions of Greek Week.
“Greek Week 2008 was definitely a success,” Greek Week Tri-Director Phil Saettele said. “It’s a competition between houses, but I think it’s even more important to look at what the week can do for the community.”
Saettele said the Greek community collected 7,000 cans of food and 3,600 units of blood over the course of the week.
On Sunday night, fraternities and sororities that competed in the weeklong event received recognition and points for participating in the Greek Week blood drive, service events and special events, competing in sports, Fling and having members of their chapters named as part of Greek Week royalty. Saettele said the blood drive and service events are worth the most points when determining the winners of Greek Week.
Fraternities and sororities received blood drive points for checking in and checking out donors at the drive, getting additional donors, providing chapter education, registering donors online and bringing the appropriate number of volunteers.
Greek Life Coordinator Julie Drury said Alpha Delta Pi sorority was disqualified from the blood drive event in accordance with the Greek Week rule book.
“Although Alpha Delta Pi lost all points possible, both Phi Kappa Theta and Tau Kappa Epsilon still received points that they had earned as organizations,” Drury said.
Drury said Alpha Delta Pi sorority violated a rule that forbids “any act deemed unethical by the American Red Cross, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Greek Life or University of Missouri Greek Week Steering Committee. When in doubt, ask the Greek Week Blood Committee.”
Tri-Director Erin Beagen said she has received no notification of any appeals of the results.
As part of the service component of Greek Week, students volunteered for Caring for Columbia, a daylong service event, by hosting booths, helping athletes at the Special Olympics and cleaning up trash on the MU campus and throughout Columbia.
Gamma Phi Beta sorority, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and Beta Sigma Psi fraternity received top scoring for the category.
Special events included a Greek Week concert, the Chad Eatherly Memorial 5K Fun Run and a golf tournament. Alpha Delta Pi, Pi Kappa Theta and Tau Kappa Epsilon and Kappa Delta sorority, Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity both received full points in the special events category.
Greek Week games included kickball, tug of war, soccer, basketball, volleyball and flag football. Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, FarmHouse fraternity and Delta Tau Delta fraternity took first place.
Along with announcing Alpha Delta Pi, Phi Kappa Theta and Tau Kappa Epsilon as the overall winners of Fling, superlatives were awarded to chapters for excellence in specific areas related to Fling. Awards for best choreography went to Pi Beta Phi sorority, Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Acacia fraternity and Chi Omega sorority, Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity, Sigma Chi fraternity and Delta Chi fraternity were recognized for best backdrop and Pi Beta Phi, Beta Theta Pi and Acacia received the title for best flats and props.
