Benefit held for injured student

April 25, 2008

Five bands and about 300 supporters came together for a benefit concert for junior Mike Maniaci, who was injured over spring break.

Maniaci was struck by a car in Panama City Beach, Fla. His brother Tony Maniaci confirmed he is no longer in critical condition and has been removed from the intensive care unit, but he still remains in a coma in a St. Louis hospital.

The concert's large turnout was not surprising to Maniaci’s friends.

Maniaci seemed to be friends with everyone, his roommate Bryan Ostendorf said.

“People are just attracted to him and his personality,” Ostendorf said.

Maniaci is a member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and the business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi.

Fellow Phi Kappa Theta fraternity member Mike Spearing said Maniaci’s love of music and his kindheartedness made the benefit concert the perfect opportunity to help.

Three out of every five dollars collected at the door went directly to the Maniaci family to help cover medical bills.

Organizers collected around $800, but at press time they did not have an exact total, Paul Spearing, a member of The John Gurney Band, said.

Friend and concertgoer Lindsay Boyd described Maniaci as a funny and caring person who would do anything for anyone.

“If it was anyone else he would be here in a heartbeat,” Boyd said.
