Greek students honored

The four Greek governing councils came together Wednesday night to honor outstanding Greek chapters and students.
The ceremony spotlights the positive impact of the Greek community, Interfraternity Council spokesman Sam Hargadine said. Members of the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Association, the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Multicultural Greek Council attended the reception and ceremony.
“A lot of what we do can go unnoticed, and it is important for people to get recognition for the good deeds they do,” Hargadine said. “It’s a great experience for all four councils to come together and celebrate all the great things we do for the community and for each other, to recognize the chapters and individuals who make the Greek system what it is.”
One chapter in each council was honored with the prestigious Excellence Cup, said Elizabeth Kauffmann, graduate assistant for the Office of Greek Life.
Other cups recognized individual core values.
A committee of administrators and faculty evaluated the applications, Kauffmann said.
Kappa Alpha Theta sorority took home the overall Excellence Cup and three other cups: the Columbia Cup, the Chancellor’s Cup and the President’s Cup.
“Nationally, Kappa Alpha Theta strives for a really well-balanced college woman, and we try to go across the board and see how can we maintain scholarship and leadership and service, aspects of Greek life and just life in general,” Kappa Alpha Theta sorority spokeswoman Taylor Rausch said.
Last semester, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority created a weeklong fantasy football competition fundraiser to benefit Court Appointed Special Advocates, a nonprofit coalition of volunteers trained to represent foster children in court. The group raised $12,000.
MGC spokeswoman Mari Moseley said the award ceremony promotes the contributions of all four councils.
“I think it’s important to have this night because it recognizes all that Greek life has done and is still doing,” she said. “It brings us together.”
