The MU chapter of the NAACP will accept applications for its fourth annual Image Awards until 5 p.m today.

The awards honor student organizations, individual students, faculty and staff who have contributed to the black community at MU, Image Awards Chairman Derrick Alexander said.

The theme of this year’s awards is “Celebrating Us.”

He said many events honoring the black community celebrate famous figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. or Thurgood Marshall, the first black Supreme Court justice, but the Image Awards honor MU students, faculty and staff.

“We will highlight (the famous figures) while celebrating us — the black community on campus,” Alexander said.

Alexander said the awards are an incentive for winners to keep up their good work. Winners will receive a plaque commemorating the award, he said.

One new award this year is the Charles Hamilton Houston Collegiate Career Award, which honors a senior who has exhibited leadership and dedication for his or her four years at MU. Houston was a black lawyer who helped bring an end to “Jim Crow” laws that allowed “separate but equal” facilities for black people after the Civil War.

“It gives them a sense of ‘I didn’t do all this for nothing,’” Alexander said. “It makes them feel appreciated.”

Alexander said he expects around 150 people to attend the award ceremony, which will be held at 6 p.m. April 27 in Stotler Lounge.

This year’s awards are sponsored by a variety of student groups and academic departments in addition to the MU chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
