Softball pulls off sweep
The mercy rule ended the game five innings early.
April 4, 2008
On Wednesday, the Missouri Tigers’ softball team snapped its two-game losing streak by winning both of their doubleheader games against the Drake Bulldogs at University Field.
In the first game, the Tigers blanked the Bulldogs 16-0 and in the process ended the game by way of the mercy rule. The Tigers won the second game 5-1.
The Tigers (33-10) won the first game by getting ahead early and not letting go. After a nine-run first inning, the Tigers scored three in the second inning and added four more in the fourth inning. The 16 runs the Tigers scored were the highest offensive output for the team on the season.
Senior pitcher Jen Bruck is now 9-5 after shutting out the Bulldogs for five innings in the first game. She only allowed two hits and gave up one walk while striking out five. She also helped her own cause by drawing two walks, getting a hit and scoring a run in her three at bats.
In the second game, junior pitcher Stacey Delaney got the win after seven innings of nearly flawless play. She only gave up three hits and one earned run while tallying 11 strikeouts.
The only Bulldog score came off a solo home run by sophomore infielder Jaci Faidley. The win helped Delaney improve to 14-3 on the season.
Sophomore Julie Silver went 3 for 5 in the first game with two runs and two RBIs. In the second game she went 1 for 3 with another run. Junior infielder Lindsey Ubrun had a great day as well, going 1 for 3 with a run and RBI in the first game and 2 for 2 with a walk, two runs, and one RBI in the second game. The Tigers’ batters had a spectacular day going on to have a combined .360 batting average in the Wednesday doubleheader.
The Tigers will take their winning streak into a two-game series against the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, Okla., on Friday and Saturday. Wins against the Sooners will almost certainly assure the Tigers of top 25 spot with only a month left before the Big 12 tournament. In true road games, the Tigers are just 4-4, as opposed to their 17-1 record in Columbia.
