An MU sophomore was involved in a one-car accident on Maguire Boulevard in southeast Columbia early Sunday morning, according to the Columbia Police Department.

Boston L. Hatcher, 21, of St. Joseph, was racing on Maguire just south of Lemone Industrial Boulevard at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday when he lost control of the 2002 Pontiac Firebird he was driving.

Hatcher crashed into a parked tractor-trailer, which was empty at the time of the crash, severely damaging his own vehicle and causing him minor injuries.

He was transported by personal means to University Hospital, where he has since been treated and released for minor injuries.

“We’ve had complaints about pockets of drag racing around the city,” CPD Capt. Zim Schwartze said. “Sometimes on Lemone, other times on the Business Loop or other places.”

Hatcher’s speed at the time of impact has yet to be determined, but Schwartze said the police are still investigating.

“To get that we have to look at the length and type of the skidmarks,” Schwartz said.

Hatcher had no passengers, and Schwartze said she received no indications of any drugs or alcohol at the scene at this time.
