Former MU linebacker Marquis X. Booker has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon after police said he was involved in an altercation at his apartment building in March.
Booker was arrested March 16 by Columbia police on suspicion of unlawful use of a weapon and possession of alcohol by a minor.
According to the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office, Booker’s felony preliminary hearing will be May 13 at 2:30 pm in Division 5.
Booker, who is a sophomore from Oklahoma, was a linebacker for the MU football team until the incident occurred.
“He was dismissed from the team two days after the incident happened,” athletic department spokesman Chad Moller said. “He’s no longer part of the program.”
Moller also said Booker would not be allowed to rejoin the team at a later date.
On the morning of Sunday, March 16, Columbia police received a call to The Gateway at Columbia on Buttonwood drive.
“People reported a disturbance outside their windows, and when they looked outside, they saw a party yelling at individuals on the third floor,” Columbia Police Department Capt. Stephen Monticelli said. “They heard someone yell that they were ‘going to shoot up the place’ and then go to a car and remove a weapon. They then called the police.”
Monticelli said as police arrived on the scene, the suspects were leaving. The suspects included post-graduate linebacker recruit George White, junior linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, sophomore wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, an unidentified female and Boooker. They were driving a 2007 Nissan Altima.
The suspects then were subjected to a felony car stop, because the officers had received information that someone was armed, Monticelli said.
The officer followed the vehicle until more officers were able to get close. They stopped behind the vehicle and had the suspects get out one at a time.
The suspects were then secured. After speaking to the suspects, the police searched the vehicle. Police found a 9mm gun belonging to Booker.
None of the other passengers were arrested. The other players will not be removed from the team, Moller said.
