One woman died in a three-person car accident Tuesday on I-70 westbound near Providence Road at 10:55 a.m., according to a Columbia Police Department news release.
Jane F. Starkey, 61, of Fulton was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the news release.
CPD Sgt. Tim Moriarity said the other drivers, Leslie Ash, 57, of Hoschton, Ga., and David Allen, 48, of Columbia, reported no injuries although one of the drivers’ heads was hit against the windshield. Medical treatment was declined.
“Although he hit a windshield he refused medical treatment and said he was okay,” Moriarity said.
Starkey was in a pickup pulling a trailer and was traveling westbound in the left lane on I-70, according to the news release. As she approached Providence Road she struck the rear of Ash’s semi-tractor trailer.
Ash was stopped due to congested traffic. Allen was traveling in a pickup truck behind Starkey and swerved, striking the rear of Starkey’s vehicle. Allen continued around Starkey and became wedged between the concrete center divider and Ash.
Starkey’s name wasn’t released until later in the afternoon on request of her husband, the news release stated. The release specified that he did this to have time to notify family.
Moriarity said the accident is still under investigation.
