Police responded Tuesday night to a report of an assault with a knife.

The assault resulted in the hospitalization of a Columbia man.

The Columbia Police Department arrested Columbia resident Daniel Roe on suspicion of first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

At about 8:48 p.m. police responded to a call that an assault had occurred at 1108 N. Garth Ave., according to a release.

At the scene, police made contact with a witness and the victim, a 38-year-old Columbia man with a stab wound to his abdomen.

The witness and the victim identified the suspect, and the victim was taken to the emergency room at University Hospital for treatment.

The release stated police determined there had been an argument between the suspect and the victim at the scene of the crime, in which the two men began to wrestle.

During the altercation, the suspect produced a knife and stabbed the victim in the abdomen.

The report states the victim and the witness then went back inside, and the suspect left on foot.

Police later found the suspect at his residence.

CPD Sgt. Bruce Houston said it was unclear what relationship the victim had with the suspect, or if drugs or alcohol were involved in the altercation.

According to the news release, the suspect did not have any injuries at the time of the arrest, but requested medical attention after the booking process had been completed and was taken to a local medical facility for evaluation.

CPD Sgt. Mike Maynard said the man requested attention for some mental health problems, but that when suspects ask for medical attention, police do not ask what the nature of the problem is before seeking medical help for them.

At the time of the release, it had not been determined if the suspect was admitted to the hospital.
