Editorial: Gov. Blunt needs to sign for student curator vote

June 4, 2008

On May 16, the Missouri House passed a bill ensuring that the final vote on the UM system’s governing body would go to the board’s student representative, ending a 12-year fight by system students to convince state representatives to pass such legislation.

Over the course of the year, we’ve asked for students to contact legislators and express their opinions concerning the issue, called for Senate and House representatives to pledge their support and work towards the legislation’s success and requested the bill be passed without amendment to secure its passage during this legislative session. Now, we have one final request: for Governor Matt Blunt to sign the bill.

The fact that the bill has made it successfully through the House and Senate despite past years of failure to pass demonstrates that even legislators who previously opposed the bill now understand its importance and support the cause. If Blunt were to veto the bill, it would show not only a lack of respect for student concerns but also a sharp disconnect with the desires of Missouri legislators.

It’s time for students to have a concrete say in decisions made concerning our education and our future, and we’re almost there - all we need now, Gov. Blunt, is the flick of your pen.
