Blunt vetoes 'student curator bill'
ASUM board chairman said the organization wants the General Assembly to overturn the veto.

Gov. Matt Blunt vetoed a bill today that would have granted a vote to the student representative to the UM system Board of Curators pending the state's loss of a congressional district in 2010.
Students have lobbied for similar bills for several years, but this is the first time such legislation has made it to the governor's desk. Blunt cited six problems with the legislation in a news release.
"This legislation would have created 'stakeholder' representatives which is a significant problem because today the nine curators represent the university as a whole rather than a specific university interest, cause or stakeholder group," he said in the release. "The legislation would have also been inconsistent with the statutory method used to select these curators and the student curator would only serve a short time compared with the other board members."
Craig Stevenson, Associate Students of the University of Missouri board chairman and former legislative director, said the organization hopes to work with the General Assembly to overturn the veto.
"We'll be looking at all possibilities, whether that's a letter writing campaigns, phone banking or a rally at the Capitol," he said. "ASUM hopes to ally with the other public universities in the state to show the governor and legislature that students really do want this."
