Columbia police arrested a man who they said robbed a bank Thursday evening.

Maurice Penny Sr., 45, entered the Bank of America at 17 W. Broadway, approached a teller and presented a note demanding money, a police news release stated. After Penny acquired the cash, he fled the scene on his bicycle.

A Bank of America employee called police at approximately 5 p.m. to report the theft.

Penny was found at the 900 block of West Ash Street and, after a brief foot pursuit, was apprehended and taken into custody by officers, the news release stated.

"He made statements that incriminated him to this particular crime," Columbia Police Department Lt. Scott Young said.

Bank employees then identified Penny as the suspect and he was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery.

Young said he believed Penny had acted alone in the incident.

Young said the case is an on-going investigation and would not release the amount that was stolen or say whether it was recovered.
