In his 2010 budget which will be delivered to both chambers tonight, Nixon proposed the elimination of more than 1,300 state government positions. Nixon called the planned cuts "the largest single reduction in the state's bureaucracy in modern history."

Nixon reiterated his commitment to K-12 and higher education by pledging $3 billion to public classrooms and laying out his plan to keep funding for state universities at current levels. Under an agreement made with university presidents last week, tuition will be capped as long as state funding does not decrease.
