Volleyball loses to Kansas State on the road

When the Missouri volleyball team has hit better than its opponents this season, it has been assured the win. On Wednesday, the Tigers dropped a match despite having a hitting percentage .009 better than their opponent for the first time in 2009. Missouri fell 1-3 (21-25, 25-18, 20-25, 23-25) to Kansas State. Junior outside hitter Paola Ampudia led the Missouri attack with 17 kills on 49 total attacks and one service ace. Ampudia's kills were often vital for the Tigers to keep the match close, especially in the first set when the Tigers dug themselves a 3-9 hole before battling back to take the 12-11 lead. The Wildcats started to pull away and took the first set 25-21. The second set looked more dominating for Kansas State as they jumped to a 5-1 lead over the Tigers. Strong services from junior outside hitter Catie Wilson and continued assault from Ampudia and junior outside hitter Weiwen Wang put the Tigers on top and they never looked back. The Wildcats had four players with double-digit kills and had 23 more chances on the attack. Junior outside hitter Julianna Klein was the other Missouri player to record double-digit kills as she notched 12 on 49 total attacks. The Tigers stayed promising in the final two sets, but consistent runs from Kansas State ended the chances at a comeback. The loss drops the Tigers' record to 12-7 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12. Kansas State improves to 7-10 overall and 1-6 in the Big 12. Missouri's next match is Saturday against No. 7 Nebraska at the Hearnes Center.
