A Columbia resident was arrested for attempting to steal an armed police officer's wallet, a Columbia Police Department news release stated.
A CPD plainclothes officer was outside of the Ultra Mart convenience and liquor store preparing to conduct a routine alcohol sale compliance check when the suspect attempted to rob him, the news release stated.
The officer was accompanying a person less than 21 who would attempt to buy alcohol and determine whether the store was complying with alcohol sales laws. A uniformed sergeant was nearby, ready to assist with the compliance check, CPD spokeswoman Jessie Haden said.
Around 11:30 p.m., the suspect exited the store and shouted at the officer, who did not respond, Haden said. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old David W. Riley, kicked a bottle on the ground and appeared angry. He then walked over his car and began to get into the passenger's side.
The police officer kept an eye on Riley who began yelling profanities and calling the officer names, Haden said. Riley got out of his car and made a beeline for the officer, demanding his wallet.
The officer was able to draw his gun and produce his police badge during the incident. Haden said the suspect, who was unarmed, stepped back from the officer but refused to comply with orders to get on the ground.
The uniformed CPD sergeant assisting with the compliance check rushed over and took control of the driver, who was compliant with police orders, Haden said. The two officers called for assistance and were aided by other CPD officers.
Riley suffered from a minor cut on his face while the officer tried to gain control over him.
Riley was arrested for one count of resisting arrest, with a $4,500 bond and one count of second-degree robbery, the release stated.
