Column:
Hype over Tebow might be warranted

It's 3:45 p.m. on a Saturday midway through the college football season, and I've just about had it with all the news about senior quarterback Tim Tebow of the Florida Gators.
At this point, I almost think I'd rather watch a blank TV screen than continue watching hearing about how great "Saint" Tebow is.
It seems like everyone who's ever heard of the University of Florida is absolutely enamored of this guy. Yes, his stats are impressive, but does he really deserve all the hype he has garnered?
Watching the national championship game last year between the Gators and the Oklahoma Sooners, the extent to which the commentators gushed over him was simply nauseating. It seemed like every time he got in the huddle, one of the announcers would harp on what a great example he is and how good of a sport he has become, before and after he got tagged with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for taunting an Oklahoma defensive player with the Gator Chomp.
Then again, I've never met the man. He very well could be a real-life Clark Kent clad in orange and blue. The way the Gators faithfully accepted his announcement to come back and play his senior year (instead of opting for the NFL Draft), they very well might think he is. To say the crowd erupted after his announcement during the national championship reception is a gross understatement. Judging from the absolutely berserk response from the crowd, you would have thought he just won them another championship right there.
Perhaps he did. It's difficult to argue against his past impact. Being a part of two national championship teams and being the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy, among numerous other accolades, are hard to ignore. People love him in Gainesville, Fla. There's no question about that, but would he still be as highly considered if he hadn't led them to the top twice? Or perhaps that is all you have to do. Would the meanest, nastiest player be regarded just as highly if he matched Tebow in credentials?
For the sake of the "Gator Nation," I hope not. Football is almost embarrassingly important on college campuses and if all you have to do to earn our hearts is pass well, it would be a sad state of affairs.
Although I pray this isn't the case for football fans such as myself, I don't think it is. Tebow continues to prove he is from a different mold than most quarterbacks. His pledge when he was addressing the media following a 2008 loss to Ole Miss still gives me chills. It's noteworthy when anyone gets a quote posted on a workout facility, but it's unheard of when the guy's still suiting up for you on weekends.
Although it's always tough to see any player go down, I have never seen any group of people more distraught and concerned about the well-being of an individual player than when Florida fans were rattled by Tebow's concussion in a game at Kentucky this season. Maybe there is more to this player than meets the eye. Maybe he truly is one of those special, once-in-a-lifetime types of players. The type when every time he touches the football, something amazing happens.
Does he deserve all the hype he gets? That's still to be determined, but I think I'll take Saint Tebow over the blank TV screen for just a little bit longer.
Correction:
Tim Tebow's injury against Kentucky occurred at Kentucky, not at Florida's stadium known as "The Swamp." The Maneater regrets the error.

That was a great read. After getting sick and tired & tired and sick of Gator Haters bashing Tebow for no good reason (really, no GOOD reason), it's nice to see someone on the outside recognize that he MIGHT be a once-in-a-lifetime player & person on the college football field. Well written. Thanks for writing that. Go Gators!

Just want to make one observation. "...I have never seen any group of people more distraught and concerned about the well-being of an individual player than when the Swamp was rattled by Tebow's concussion in a game against Kentucky this season." There was no reaction in the Swamp, because that game was played in Kentucky. Unless by the "Swamp", you just mean Gator Nation. I go to UF, and I can say that it was definitely the scariest moment in Florida football over the last four years. Just seeing Tebow lie there on the field, not moving, arms splayed. It was like seeing an atomic clock stop ticking or something.

I'm a Florida alumna and a longtime Gator fan, and I can tell you that the hype generated about Tim Tebow is mostly due to the media - they seem to need to create drama and to fill a lot of air/print/blog space. They have fueled this frenzy. Gator fans are naturally wild about Tim because he wins a lot of games and does a lot of good deeds off the field (including signing lots of autographs, taking photos with fans - especially pretty female ones, and doing charity work), but I do not think any of us sit around gushing about him as much as the TV commentators and online reporters do. It's actually kind of weird, the intense obsession. I think they are setting him up to fail as he is just a human being, sort of a build him up only to tear him down thing. Media needs bold characters in order to generate excitement, so he suits them - but at what cost? Surely he craves some of it, but I think he must wish for it to subside at this point.

John, As a Florida Gator Alum living in Kansas City, MO it is exciting to read someone from this area show the respect that I feel Tebow deserves. Of course I am clouded by the man-crush that I have had since the legend was born his freshman year. It is great to be a gator! Go Gators...

I'm at Iowa State now but I graduated from UF a decade ago. I must say that none of the players at UF that time and since have been quite like Tebow on and off the field. Tebow also happened to be the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy. Prior to that, only juniors and seniors ever won the Heisman. I think there have been some equally respectable players this year like the QB at Texas but I must say there were some times the past 2 seasons that it seemed like not as much of the team showed up to play with the heart that Tebow did. I hear he will be in a Super Bowl commercial coming up next month and so I am looking forward to it.

The Gainesville faithful love Tebow, because they know already, no matter what gets said, that this is an unusually high quality MAN. We feel priviledged to be able to savor every game with a fine young man at the helm. We are all fortunate to do this, not just Gator fans..or the haters... If you don't believe me, wait until next year when the gators build another fine quality young man and put him at the helm. But he won't be Tebow, and should not be. There can be only one. Nice post.
