The department of student services, a faction of the Missouri Students Association, hosted its bi-annual Safety Walk on Tuesday night.

The walk hopes to reveal campus issues before they become a serious problem or possible endangerment for students.

"I don't have any projected concerns," Assistant Director of Student Services Kaitlyn Oxenreider said. "We typically look for things stuck in the power lines, sidewalk cracks, dark places and broken emergency blue lights."

The MU Police Department, undergraduate and graduate student volunteers came out to take one of the four routes around a section of campus.

The Greek community also hosts safety walks throughout Greektown in the same fashion, Oxenreider said.

The meetings typically begin with free food, and this time it was Jimmy John's sandwiches and various sodas. Afterward, the volunteers break up into four different groups assigned to a color and route for a section of campus. The groups then walk their route looking for anything that could pose a problem to pedestrians.

"Four different MUPD officers come out to be on each walk," Oxenreider said.

The main problems found were related to dark spots throughout campus that pose risks to students walking at night.

"They have actually installed lamps in areas that we've pointed out from these walks," Paul Whiteside, a third-time volunteer from MSA said.
