After filtering content through Saturday Night Live and the Web, comedic super group The Lonely Island -- featuring Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer -- have finally released their debut album Incredibad.
The album is a fantastic parody of the current state of music and comes packaged with the some of the more memorable videos from the group. If you happen to be missing your funny bone, I'd would advise you to stay away from Incredibad, but for those with a quirky sense of humor it's a great find.
The album's first track, "Santana DVX," is a fully produced hip-hop ode to the group's favorite alcoholic beverage, Santana champagne. Featuring E-40, each emcee memorably describes the effects of the champagne in voices reminiscent of the Beastie Boys.
The phenomenon and eventual viral video known as "Jizz in My Pants" is the second track on the album. For those who've missed out, the song is one of the best comedy songs, you know, about jizzing in pants. The song sounds strongly influenced by Timbaland. Lucky for those in love with the viral video, it comes as part of the CD/DVD combo.
Next up is "I'm on a Boat." The Lonely Island recruits the help of T-Pain for the most radio-friendly track on the album. It's definitely the best parody of the rap industry at this point in time with everyone absurdly bragging about, what else, being on a boat. The cherry on top is definitely T-Pain, who remains completely serious throughout his contribution.
What would a comedy-musical effort be without Jack Black? On "Sax Man," Black is the only artist performing as he tries to get a phantom "Sax Man" to start jamming on the song, making one of the funniest songs on the album.
Some of the other highlights of the album are "Like a Boss" and "Dream Girl." "Like a Boss" is a fantastic rap about how boss the life of a cubicle worker is, but with an extra twist. It sounds like the rap hit of the same name by Slim Thug. "Dream Girl" is the group's description of their perfect girl. The Norah Jones appearance makes you wonder if they just might be serious. Once again the concept of the song is great with lines like "You put away Slurpees like a trash can" getting the message across.
"Ras Trent" is the new anthem for earthy college guys. Once a short on SNL, the song has strong reggae elements and has Samberg rapping about midterms and switching religions.
Last but not least on the album is the title track "Incredibad." Think of it as The Lonely Island explaining how they came to be. The beat has a '90s hip-hop sound with loops that again pull from the Beastie Boys. The storytelling featured on this track is some of the best on a comedy album since Tenacious D.
Don't worry, all of the SNL classics are on the album, like "Lazy Sunday," "D*ck in a Box" and even Natalie Portman's "Natalie's Rap."
