Shooting erupted at a Dollar General on Business Loop 70 over a ring tone Tuesday night.

The incident began around 6:38 p.m., when the victim began receiving text messages inside the Hong Kong Restaurant at 106 Business Loop 70 W.

As each message was received, a recorded voice on his phone alerted the victim of the newly received text, Columbia Police Department Sgt. Ken Hammond said.

This caused a group of teenagers who were also at the restaurant to begin harassing the victim.

A group of eight to 10 teenagers began making fun of the 36-year-old man's ring tone when the phone would sound in the restaurant, a CPD news release stated.

The victim then left the restaurant and went to a Dollar General near the restaurant. The suspects continued to harass the victim in the parking lot of the Dollar General after the victim left the store, the news release stated.

The victim responded before getting in his car to leave the parking lot.

The teenagers fired three or four shots from a gun after he got in his car and began backing out of his space.

Hammond said there was nothing out of the ordinary as the cause of this incident.

The victim left the scene and called 911 from a safe distance, the news release stated.

Officers found uncovered shell casings in the parking lot of the Dollar General. Both the victim and his car were untouched by any of the shots fired, the news release stated.
