Police are looking for a suspect after blood was found at a burglary crime scene that happened around 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The burglary occurred at the Parkade Center along Business Loop 70 at Saul's Seismic Inc., a Columbia Police Department news release stated.

Officers arrived at the scene and noticed broken glass on the front of the building.

"Officers at the scene noticed blood as they searched the front of the building and went inside the business afterward to investigate," CPD Sgt. Ken Hammond said.

Upon further search of the building, CPD officers discovered more blood inside the building, but were unable to track any blood outside of the store.

"Due to it raining in the early morning, the blood that may have been outside was washed away by rainfall," Hammond said.

Hammond also said the suspect stole an unknown amount of change from the business' cash register and stole $490 from the back office of the business.

Police think the suspect lost a lot of blood at the scene, due to the amount of blood around the business, the news release stated.

"He or she probably suffered a substantial cut somewhere on their body during the burglary," Hammond said.

The news release stated the cut was probably on the suspect's hands or arms.

Hammond also said the cut was probably on the suspect's upper body based on where blood was found in the store.

Hammond said CPD has a sample of the suspect's blood and will see if it matches any of the blood samples they have on profile.

"If it comes back as a suspect who has a profile in our file then we know who the suspect was, but if its someone who does not have a profile then we cannot use it," Hammond said.

Hammond also said the local hospitals have not reported anything to police that may affect the investigation.

"We haven't heard any reports from any hospitals about people who have come in for treatment for large cuts on their hands or arms," Hammond said.

Hammond said the location of the burglary is not unusual because shopping centers deal with these sorts of crimes often.

This investigation is ongoing and anyone with tips or information can call Crime Stoppers at 875-TIPS.
