Several aggressive dogs were loose around Columbia Wednesday morning, resulting in at least one bite victim.

Sgt. Chris Kelley of the Columbia Police Department said officers were dispatched to help Animal Control in regards to a couple of loose pit bulls.

"They reportedly had bitten several victims," Kelley said.

Officers arrived at the area of the 1300 block of Grindstone Parkway where they came upon a bite victim, stated a department news release.

Columbia resident Mark Adamson, 27, was trying to divert the attention of the dogs as they were chasing an unidentified woman when he was bitten, news release stated.

The injury was to his right calf but wasn't life threatening.

Officers followed the two dogs to an area west of the Kohl's Department Store on Nifong Boulevard. There, a dog was killed after approaching an officer outside his vehicle.

"The officer responded to that aggressive behavior by shooting the dog after the dog came towards him," Kelley said.

Animal Control took custody of the killed dog, the news release stated.

The second dog ran southbound from the location and was unable to be located at the time, the news release stated. Gerry Worley of the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services said a citizen brought in the dog later that evening.

"The second dog is currently impounded at the animal shelter of the Central Missouri Humane Society," Worely said.

Although the news release stated there were reports of numerous bite victims from the loose pit bulls, none have come forward at this time.

The owner of the dogs, Dakota Crites, was detained that afternoon for failing to control the pit bulls. He was charged with obstructing a government operation and third-degree assault, Kelley said.
