A fire caused extensive damage to a duplex on Alpine Ridge Drive on Wednesday night, leaving three sophomores without a home.

Boone County Fire Protection District and the Columbia Fire Department responded to 5119 Alpine Ridge Drive around 7:30 p.m. to a fire in a duplex, a CFD news release stated. While responding to the call, CFD crews reported seeing heavy black smoke from Derby Ridge.

CFD Battalion Chief Gary Warren Jr. said five people were in the home at the time of the fire. Sophomores Haley Nobis, Allyson Goodiel and Kara Ensor had two guests over. Everyone made it out safely and no one reported any injuries at the scene, Warren said.

The home had working smoke detectors, which were sounding, the release stated. A damage estimate is pending upon conclusion of the investigation.

The fire started when one of the residents uncovered a pot of heating cooking oil. Goodiel said flames shot straight up, hit the microwave and spread to the cabinets in a matter of seconds. The guests attempted to extinguish the flames with a towel and then baking soda while the occupants tried to locate a fire extinguisher, the release stated.

"The boys jumped up right away and tried to put it out," Goodiel said. When the flames became too intense for the residents, they evacuated and called 911.

Goodiel also said the main floor was a complete loss. The fire was so intense it melted the door off of the refrigerator and nothing from the kitchen, living room or laundry room could be salvaged.

"The second floor wasn't as bad," Goodiel said. "There is smoke and water damage, and it melted the paint off the walls."

The flames extended into the attic causing extensive smoke and fire damage and also melted the siding on an adjacent duplex, the press release stated.

Goodiel's car was in the garage at the time of the fire, and also suffered substantial smoke damage.

Goodiel said she and her roommates plan on staying with friends for a few days. Their landlord has offered them a vacant duplex and once lost furniture is replaced and belongings recovered, they plan to move into that duplex.

A day after the fire, Goodiel's parents were helping her recover as many belongings from the residence as possible. None of them had renters' insurance, she said.

"The possibility of this happening to us never crossed our mind," she said. "But you know, hindsight is 20/20."
