On Sept. 2, MU Police Department officers were called to Tiger Tech in reference to a fraud report.
According to MUPD Capt. Brian Weimer, a credit card was used to place an Internet order but the owner of the card did not authorize the purchase. Items in the order included a 17-inch MacBook Pro, Microsoft Office 2008 software, an AppleCare plan, laptop bag, a bundle of supplies and shipping fees. The cost for the purchase totaled $2,812.95.
Weimer said credit or debit fraud is a crime MUPD occasionally handles and is investigated like any other crime that occurs on campus.
"It is something we do see at times when it comes to student ID numbers and credit cards," he said.
Weimer said the suspect would be arrested for the appropriate charges depending on amounts and decals.
"The specific statue reference is fraudulent use of a credit card or debit device," Weimer said.
The Missouri Revised Statutes classifies fraudulent use of a credit device or debit card as a class A misdemeanor.
Fraud is found under stealing and other offenses in the statutes. According to a Missouri Uniform Crime Report for MU, a total of 185 larceny and theft cases have been reported to date for 2009.
Weimer also said the fraud occurred on Sept. 2, but the crime was reported on Sept. 15 on MUPD's official Web site.
