A recycling grant has been submittedby Columbia to the Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management District that would help MU with its recycling efforts.

The money from the grant would be used to purchase an additional recycling truck, MU Sustainability Coordinator Steve Burdic said.

The grant will have to go through three levels of review before it is approved.

The first review of grant applications was Jan. 19, said Cindy Jolly, district manager for Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management District.

"In January, there is a process for large grants," she said. "At this time the grant applications requesting $5,000 up to $100,000 in funding are submitted for review."

After the grant money is used, the remainder of the expense for the recycling truck will be covered by Columbia and MU, Burdic said.

"The truck would cost $150,000," Burdic said. "The grant would pay $100,000, the city $25,000 and MU $25,000 to cover the cost of the truck."

In February, the executive board will meet and review all the grants submitted to Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management.

At that meeting, the board will discuss the grants and decide which ones they want to fund, Jolly said.

When looking at each grant, the focus is on its purpose. The board will look specifically for recycling and waste management projects.

If the grant is declined, the city will continue as it has done using its existing equipment, Burdic said.

After the executive board meets in February, approved requests will be sent to the Department of Natural Resources for final review and approval to award the fund requests, Jolly said.

The Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management Executive Board will make a final decision in February, and the money would be awarded around April or May, Jolly said. At that time approved projects can start.
