Column: Roe v. Wade not a celebration
Published Jan. 29, 2010
With the 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade on Jan. 22, the MU College Democrats sponsored a rally for safe sex in Speakers Circle.
On an occasion like this, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I can not help but think it would be more appropriate to take the day and remember all the unborn children who did not receive life because of the Supreme Court's decision.
If I am wrong then I apologize, but it is my belief this safe sex rally the MU College Democrats had was really a way to celebrate the Roe v. Wade decision.
By calling it a safe sex rally, the College Democrats were trying to be politically correct and disguise its true intentions.
But how can abortion ever be politically correct?
We do not celebrate Pearl Harbor because it was a tragic day in which thousands of Americans lost their lives, just as we should not celebrate Roe v. Wade and the loss of millions of innocent children in Speakers Circle.
No matter how people feel about abortion, whether they see an unborn child or a fetus, they have to admit that abortion stops life, and it is a tragedy these children will not get to experience the beautiful gift of life.
No, I do not believe this is something we should celebrate in this country or here at MU.
If every year on Jan. 22, Americans took a minute to think about all the children this country has lost to abortion, I do not believe anyone would still support the practice.
It becomes harder and harder to support abortion, or as many liberals like to call it "choice," whenever you picture a child's face on a fetus and realize this child will not be born and will not receive life.
I saw a sign at the rally that said "freedom is choice," and I think this phrase is being used out of context.
Freedom is having the ability to make your own choices.
By living in a society, we must give up some of our rights because they unjustly affect other people's lives, like stealing or murder do.
The choice to have an abortion does unjustly violate the child's rights.
So if we're going to live in a society where it's OK to violate children's rights, why not continue this theory and make it acceptable to violate anyone's rights by allowing other crimes like theft or murder?
Roe v. Wade is probably one of the greatest liberal victories in the past century.
Who has actually benefited from this decision?
I know for sure the millions of children who would have had life, if the Roe v. Wade decision had been different, sure didn't benefit from it.
Clay Carter is a member of the MU College Republicans and a sophomore majoring in finance. He can be reached at ccp6c@mail.missouri.edu.

It's embarrassing, in a college student newspaper, to read a column that presents such an illogical argument. Clearly, critical thinking has really suffered in Academe. Anti-abortionists constantly equate choice with abortion and ignore the many other facets of birth control and family planning that go along with the freedom of reproductive choice and reproductive health, which includes sexually transmitted diseases and early detection of some cancers. Regardless of their misunderstanding of the concept of choice, one sad outcome of their rhetoric remains; women bear the brunt of reproductive responsibilities when there is no choice of reproductive freedom. Women and children suffer the poverty and hunger brought about by lack of choice. And women suffer and die from botched abortions when they are not readily available. No one can decide how many children another may bear. No one can decide who may reproduce, whether responsible potential parents or not. No one, then, ought to decide for another whether she may choose to block conception or abort a fetus. Keep your laws off of my body. Against abortion? Don't have one. Time honored statements that are as true today as they were 37 years ago.

Really, the choice for the conservative political columnist this semester were terrible. By the way, congrats on choosing a sig that says "I'm Always Right." That really makes me respect your opinion. And honestly, your argument makes zilch logical sense. Mr. Carter used the personal pronoun "I" 8 times in his column. What should I care what some sophomore finance major in the College Republicans thinks on abortion? Maybe if he wants to make a defense of the right to life, he should do so without relying on kistch little phrases like "I can not help but think" and "I think" and "I do not believe." Ok, so maybe I'll take you premise that abortion is wrong at it's face. No how did you show me that the College Democrats were actually celebrating Roe v. Wade. Isn't supporting safe sex implying that you want to deter abortions? Mr. Carter, learn how to make an argument without relying on sentimentality and your own feeble opinions. Maneater staff, stop choosing terrible columnists.

I am in full agreement with Mr. Carter. I am disgusted that these days we give more rights to terrorists, than innocent unborn children.

I agree with Clay Carter. There are other options if circumstances permit you from raising a child, like adoption. And if all you liberals want a choice, you have one, its whether or not your going to be sexually active. And if you engage in sex, then the consequences are yours. And if rape did occur (which is morally wrong) why would you turn around in response and engage in something just as morally and ethically wrong, like abortion.

It gives me a great deal of pleasure to know that there are members of the younger generation who still have a respect for life.
