A Columbia man is in custody after being arrested Saturday night in connection with an armed robbery earlier that evening.
According to a news release from the Boone County Sheriff's Department, 27-year-old Sidney Gates faces five charges, including: first-degree robbery, armed criminal action, third-degree domestic assault, possession of narcotics and an outstanding no-bond probation/parole warrant.
“At 9:41 p.m. officers were dispatched to a robbery in the 700 block of Demaret Drive,” Detective Tom O’Sullivan said.
The victim reportedly told police Gates had pulled a gun on her, taken her money and fled. She then identified Gates as her ex-boyfriend.
Gates took off in a car that had been waiting for him outside and was found by a member of the Columbia Police Department, according to the news release.
“The suspect was found in the 300 block of Texas Avenue shortly after midnight,” O’Sullivan said. “He was detained by a CPD officer who knew we were looking for him in this investigation.”
The suspect returned to jail yesterday morning because he had an active probation parole warrant.
“Gates went back to the pen at 11:50 a.m. and is still there now," O’Sullivan said. "He’s not going anywhere for a while.”
Gates has pleaded guilty to multiple criminal charges in the past, including possession of a controlled substance and illegal possession of a firearm. He was arrested and still faces charges for an investigation of shots fired at a Columbia police officer on Sept. 7.
