An 18-year-old who was shot outside a private party has been released from the hospital.

The victim was shot in the leg at 3:10 a.m. Saturday outside the Midwest Sports Academy, a Boone County Sheriff's Department news release stated.

The Midwest Sports Academy, located at 1425 Boone Industrial Blvd., is a privately owned facility that hosts basketball camps for youth. A separate private group rented out the facility Friday night, said Major Tom Reddin of the sheriff's department.

Because there were multiple casings and multiple calibers of ammunition found at the scene, investigators think people were shooting at each other, Reddin said.

The victim said he heard a conflict occurring, got on the ground and was caught in the crossfire. Reddin said the victim was not a personal acquaintance of the shooter.

"The victim has reported that they didn't know who shot them," he said.

There are no suspects in the investigation at this time. The owners of the Midwest Sports Academy are disturbed by what took place and are working with the sheriff's department during the investigation, Reddin said.

Detectives are working to locate people who were in attendance and others with information about the incident, Reddin said. The sheriff's department is seeking help from the public. Anyone with information can call the sheriff's department or Crime Stoppers.

At about the same time the shooting happened, a vehicle leaving the parking lot hit a parked car. The driver left the scene of the accident, Reddin said. Another vehicle was damaged by gunfire.

The victim's injury was not life-threatening, and he has been treated and released from a local hospital, the news release stated.

The sheriff's department has not yet determined why the involved parties opened fire.

"That's the $64,000 question," Reddin said.
