The Residential Life Chancellor’s standing committee within MSA plans to work to reduce laundry prices within residential halls due to an increase in the prices early this academic year.

“The plan is to talk with RHA (Residence Halls Association) and Residential Life,” MSA Chief of Staff Xavier Billingsley said. “We didn’t get a chance to talk to the previous RHA president but would like to open talks with (RHA president) Lauren Thomas, and (Director of Residential Life) Frankie Minor.”

Billingsley said the laundry price issue was brought up in committee this past week, but no plans have been executed.

The price of each machine increased by 25 cents per wash and dry. The increase was a result of RHA legislation that was written a few years ago, Student Affairs Chairman Tyler Ricketts said.

“The current contract with the laundry company was delivered by former RHA president Bobby Wood,” Thomas said. “This was not something we decided to implement.”

Thomas said the price increase has also given students the option to receive text notifications from the machines when their laundry is done as well as check for empty machines online.

“The price increased because students now have the option of getting online (laundryview.com) to see which machines are empty and how much time is remaining on the machines within their residence hall,” Ricketts said in an e-mail. “Essentially, the price increased because of a new service offered to residents.”

Ricketts said the issue had been brought up within the MSA Student Affairs committee earlier this semester.

“After talking with (RHA Secretary) Kathy Rudd, she explained why the changes went into effect, and I relayed that info to my committee,” Ricketts said in an e-mail. “If this is an issue that students are very concerned about, our committee and RHA can address it.”

Ricketts said he could not speak on whether the prices will go down this year or at all.

“Because this legislation was written in RHA a few years ago, I don’t think we (MSA) even realized that this was going to occur until it did this year,” Ricketts said. “Also, because the legislation was brought up in RHA, I don’t believe MSA was aware of the change.”

The laundryview.com service should really be evaluated. In Defoe-Graham, the washers all have a 40-minute time on the site. In reality, most cycles take less than half an hour. I haven't looked at any of the other locations, but I would imagine they might have similar issues. I do not find the site's service at all helpful, and I resent having to pay the extra twenty-five cents for basically no reason.
