After 12 years at Missouri, women's basketball coach Cindy Stein will resign at the end of this season, a Monday news release stated.
"The University of Missouri and I have mutually agreed that it is in the best interest of the program to announce at this time that I will not be returning as the head women's basketball coach past this season," Stein said in the release. "I will actively coach up until our final game of the season, whenever that might be."
The Tigers stand at 11-16 overall and 1-13 in Big 12 play this season, with two regular season games left to play.
Stein's tenure has seen the Tigers make three NCAA Tournaments (including the Sweet 16 in 2001) and compile a record of 184-175.
This season will go down as Missouri's third straight with a losing record, with the Tigers going 4-12 and 2-14 in conference play the last two seasons.
With the exception of an upset win over then-No. 10 Baylor on Jan. 23 at Mizzou Arena, this year has been more of the same for the Tigers.
In addition, Stein's contract ends at the end of this season.
"Cindy has been an outstanding representative of the University of Missouri, and for Mizzou Athletics, over the years," Athletics Director Mike Alden said in the release. "She and her staff have worked hard and have produced achievements, which will be remembered fondly. With that, we do accept Cindy's resignation, and believe this is the right time for us to go a different direction with our women's basketball program. We thank Cindy for her contributions and know that she'll continue to work hard through the final buzzer this year."
Missouri will play Texas at 7 p.m. Wednesday before ending the regular season Sunday against Texas Tech at Mizzou Arena.
