Greek Life recognized several students and chapters for their achievements Tuesday at the 2010 Greek Honors Night. Representatives from the Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Panhellenic Association and Interfraternity Council were in attendance to present and receive awards.
Chapters were required to fill out applications and be in good standing with the Office of Greek Life to be considered for recognition.
A selection committee included 30 judges made up of faculty and staff from various departments. The committee evaluated each application and awarded students and chapters according to their consistent pursuit of continued excellence, Greek Life Adviser Danny Jonas said.
"It's very important to recognize the accomplishments of our students," Jonas said. "We want to make sure they receive the recognition they deserve."
The event started at 6 p.m. in Memorial Union's Stotler Lounge. The MGC, NPHC, PHA and IFC presidents gave the introduction and thanked their members for their service to the Greek Life community.
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Cathy Scroggs gave the keynote speech, emphasizing continued excellence from the Greek Life community.
"We are a world-class university," Scroggs said. "So when I think of our Greek community, I expect it to be world class. Period."
Scroggs underscored the importance of individual and chapter achievement for Greek Honors Night.
"Tonight we're going to recognize them because they've done some pretty darn remarkable things," Scroggs said.
The individual awards for Outstanding Support to the Greek Community were presented first. Awards in this category were Outstanding House Director, Chapter President, Adviser and Faculty Member. MGC, NPHC, PHA and IFC each chose two winners for Outstanding Member.
The recipients of the Selfless Helper award were Brianna Dunn of Kappa Alpha Theta and Ryan Neff of Beta Theta Pi. Brian Kirn of Pi Kappa Phi and Stacey Jarret of Kappa Alpha Theta were awarded the Unsung Hero award.
The IFC awarded the Nathan L. Shore Scholarship to junior John Bowen, and the PHA awarded the Panhellenic Excellence Scholarship to Katherine McCarter of Pi Beta Phi.
The Senior 4.0 Award was given to five Greek Life members who achieved a 4.0 GPA for four years.
"As far as the individual awards, it's a good recognition for their resume and for the great things they have done for the chapter," Jonas said.
The 2011 Greek Week directors were revealed to attendees of Greek Honors Night. Junior Kelly Nelson, junior Ann Reisch, junior John Bowen and junior Jonathan Schmalfeld were told Monday they were selected to be the next Greek Week directors.
"I think we are all really excited," Nelson said.
The incoming Greek Week directors discussed Greek Honors Night.
"Greek Honors Night is important because it gives the Greek Community the chance to recognize itself, instead of just the negative aspects," Reisch said.
Trophy cups were awarded to the chapters with overall excellence in service and philanthropy, scholarship, innovative programming, leadership, unity, wellness and excellence.
Awards such as Fundraising through Friendship, Best Scholarship Program and Community Leadership were also given to chapters.
Jonas discussed what these chapter awards meant to the Greek Community.
"It will help a chapter because it can translate into better recruitment and by just noticing the good things they do for the community," Jonas said.
