Deputies arrested two men and two juveniles on suspicion of burglary yesterday, Boone County Sheriff's Department Major Tom Reddin said. They are suspected of burglarizing two homes in southwest Columbia on Wednesday morning.
Deputies responded to a call from a citizen who reported seeing four people leave a neighbor's house with property that belonged inside the home, Reddin said. The citizen gave a description of the people and their vehicle.
"Officers had already been dispatched and were en route to that location when a Columbia police officer, who was responding to the area, observed the vehicle in the area and tried to initiate a traffic stop," Reddin said. "The vehicle then took off."
James Miller, 17, and a 14-year-old boy were arrested on foot near where the officer had found the vehicle. Drake Kinney, 17, and a 15-year-old boy were apprehended a few miles away, a Sheriff's Department news release stated.
"It was discovered that in the matter of the pursuit, the vehicle had apparently stopped and let suspects out at one or two different locations, who fled on foot," Reddin said.
The Columbia Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted in the arrest because the four suspects were leading officers on a chase, Reddin said.
While authorities were pursuing the subjects, a woman called to report a second burglary in the area. The news release stated she had returned to her home on Pickford Place to find her back door forced open and valuable items, including a flat-screen TV and three laptop computers, missing.
"When we located the suspects and the vehicle and took them into custody, we discovered property not only from the Georgetown Drive residence but also from the Pickford (Place) residence," Reddin said.
Miller and Kinney were charged with second-degree burglary, felony stealing, resisting arrest and property damage. The news release stated the two teenagers were turned over to juvenile authorities.
