CPD arrests man on charge of sexual misconduct

Published May 7, 2010

Yuan Liu, 24, was arrested and charged with first-degree sexual misconduct. He made unwanted sexual advances to a woman in a car in southeast Columbia on Sunday, Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Jessie Haden said.

The woman reported him to police after he kissed and touched her without her permission, Haden said. They were in Liu's car in the parking lot of McGinty's Pub on S. Old 63 when the alleged assault occurred.

Liu had driven her to a party after dinner with a mutual friend, Haden said. The victim had asked Liu to take her home because she was feeling sick.

"She was trying to push him away and telling him to stop, but she was feeling very ill," Haden said. "Finally, she threw up, and that's when he stopped."

Liu then went into the pub, leaving the woman in the car until a friend took her home. She reported his actions to police later that day, Haden said.

Sexual misconduct means intentionally subjecting another person to sexual contact without that person's consent, according to the Missouri Revised Statutes. Haden said sexual contact includes touching someone's breasts, buttocks or genital area.

First-degree sexual misconduct without a previous conviction is a class A misdemeanor, according to the statutes.

"When we talked to him, he advised that he did kiss her, but he denied doing anything else," Haden said.

Liu left messages on her phone, which CPD recorded as evidence, Haden said. He was released from the Boone County Jail on a $500 bond.
