MU Police Department received an early morning call Sept. 14 about a naked man breaking into a vehicle near University Hospital.

Andrew Barton, 23, of 4618 Dehaven Drive first stopped at the University Hospital emergency room Sept. 14 due to a hand injury, according to MUPD Capt. Brian Weimer.

He was seen shortly after he arrived in a nearby parking area. Witnesses then notified the police. MUPD police records show the incident happened between 3:25 a.m. and 3:45 a.m Tuesday.

Officers were called to the location at 3:50 a.m., and Weimer said those involved in the search of the hospital’s surrounding areas found a highly intoxicated Barton in a parking lot near the intersection of South College Avenue and East Stadium Boulevard.

“He had found an unlocked car in the parking lot and decided to get in,” Weimer said. “He ended up taking a bottle of prescription pills out of the vehicle.”

For the incident, Barton was charged with second-degree tampering with a motor vehicle. Weimer said Barton’s nudity was grounds for the second misdemeanor.

“He was naked at the time, which is why the arrest was labeled sexual misconduct,” Weimer said.

Weimer said Barton was extremely disoriented upon his arrest.

“He didn’t know whose car it was and he didn’t know where his pants were,” Weimer said.

After Barton was arrested, Weimer said the officers took Barton back to University Hospital to get stitches in his hand. He was taken to the police station to be processed and booked.
