Letter to the Editor:
Prop B promotes decent treatment
Published Sept. 3, 2010
With regard to the opposition on Prop B, I find, repeatedly and with dismay, that veterinarians are opposed to animal protection issues. Why is that? Because more animals mean more business for them.
Demanding better living conditions might mean less illness.
Prop B is about ensuring that animals that are being used for human entertainment and companionship, be treated with minimal levels of decency.

For more information, you can go to the MO Dept of Ag's website and read the regulations that we already have in place. You can also go to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Associations website and read their views. There are also numerous sites such as The American Kennel Club, The Farm Bureau and several state government officials that are against the bill, and have information about it on their websites. We also need to consider the cost that this program is going to be to the state. It is going to take an estimated $450,000.00-$550,000.00 a year to regulate the new laws. The MO Dept of Ag is already struggling to afford the inspectors they have, where is the money going to come from to enforce new laws? Our state does not have the budget to afford new laws when we already have sufficient laws on the books. Just please take the time to be informed before you vote. A NO vote will help the Missouri economy.

Kara, You're an idiot and much of what you posted is lies. So you're perfectly okay with excessive breeding of animals contributing to the pet overpoplation issue, which results in the needless euthanisia of hundreds of thousands of animals each year because they don't have homes. Go get a heart or better yet, why don't you put yourself in a wire cage with 4 other humans and have no room to move and have cages stacked above you where humane urine and feces pour down on you, and you do not get a bath, you might get fed, might get water, you will certainly get cold, maybe even freeze to death, as you have to stay outside. That's what most puppy mills are like, put yourself in their place and stop breeding!!!!

Lisa, You are an idiot and I suggest you do your research before you start attacking people for posting their own opinions. In case you HAVEN'T already known, there are current laws against puppy mills. In case you didn't know, this Prob B will regulate our farmers cattle, horses, etc. There was never a problem before with the amount of livestock in Mo, now they are going to be regulated to a certain amount of livestock. Although my opinion does not matter because it has just passed, I am with the other common sensed people, Prob B is a horrible idea and would cause even more poverty and debt to the state of Missouri.

Proposition B is not about animals being used for human entertainment, it only applies to dog breeders who own over 10 dogs. The Missouri Veterinary Medical Association has come out against Prop B because we already have very stringent regulations in place. We need more enforcement of the laws we already have, not new ones. The new proposed laws will only apply to licensed breeders who are already required to follow the rules. It has no provisions in place to find and shut down the so called 'puppy mills'. We are all in agreement that dogs should be treated humanely and that the 'puppy mills' should be shut down. But why would they follow new laws when they don't follow the old ones? The language that is going to be on the ballot for Proposition B is going to be extremely misleading and it is important for all Missourians to take the time to read the Proposition and to realize that most of the things in it we already have a law for. For example, we already have a law that says we have to provide our dogs with clean water at all times and adequate food daily. We already have laws that regulate how much room our dogs have to have, we already have to have an exercise program in place for our dogs. The problem is they want to change the room requirements so much, that there is no way to do that without completely gutting already sufficient pens. That would cost tens of thousands of dollars that in today's economy is just not feasible for most people. They want to require that our dogs have more room than your children do. And they want to make it a misdemeanor if anything gets into the dogs water, so during the fall if a leaf gets in their bowl, we can be charged with a class 'c' misdemeanor. They also want to limit a breeder to 50 dogs. Who says that a person can take care of 50 dogs just fine, but that 51 are too many. And what about the people with only 10 dogs, that treat them terribly but because they don't go over the limit they aren't regulated. That is an example of how this will affect the responsible licensed breeder and not the puppy mills. And it is outside organizations and their radical affiliates in the state, that are trying to force Missourians to follow their 'ideas', that will cost this state MILLIONS of dollars in revenue and jobs. The results of this Proposition would be far reaching and devastating to Missouri's economy. Please take the time to study the facts before you vote. I believe that the people of Missouri are smart enough to think for themselves and will see through all the lies that they are trying to make us swallow. A NO vote on Proposition B will help protect the Missouri economy.
