An MU freshman was arrested with two other men Saturday night after an officer found salvia, marijuana and alcohol in their vehicle.

MU Police Department Capt. Scott Richardson said an officer made contact with the suspects just before 10 p.m. during a traffic stop.

"The vehicle was stopped after an officer observed the van turning onto eastbound Rollins Street from northbound Hitt Street without showing any lights," Richardson said. "The car was eventually stopped on southbound Virginia Avenue."

While speaking with the suspects, the officer noticed marijuana seeds inside the vehicle, Richardson said.

"Upon searching the vehicle, the officer found two bags of marijuana, one weighing 10 grams and the other weighing 15 grams," Richardson said. "In addition, the officer found Seagram's gin and Budweiser beer inside the vehicle."

Richardson said the officer also discovered .3 grams of salvia after searching the car. According to the Missouri Revised Statutes, salvia is a Schedule I controlled substance and possession is a Class C felony.

Freshman Steven Fonseca was arrested on suspicion of possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana and possession of alcohol by a minor. Both Daniel Parks and Shane Elliott, residents of Florissant, were arrested on the same two charges. Possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana and possession of alcohol by a minor are both misdemeanor offenses, according to the Missouri Revised Statutes.

Parks, the 19-year-old driver, was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and failure to display lights. According to Boone County records, Parks was taken to Boone County Jail on Saturday night and released Sunday on $4,500 bond.

He wasn't DUI? So for driving with lights off, which could really hurt someone, he ends up arrested on a felony because he wanted to explore his consciousness, maybe have some risky fun that hurts no one else? Great work everybody. Another educated dirtbag off the streets, probably kicked out of college, MAJOR family strife, limited career opportunities, legal expenses for him, enforcement expenses for the state, and you can all rest easier. I just dont understand depriving a young educated man of his liberty to do as he pleases as long as no one else gets hurt. Seriously? Was there no crime being committed, no mugging, no runaway teen, not even domestic violence that could have been dealt with rather than trashing a young life? How can it be that the same people who advocate for personal liberty, whether it is freedom of religion, freedom to assemble, freedom of sppeech and the right to bear arms will support this kind of control over individual behavior? What is better now than before the arrest? You think young people who hear alarmist nonsense will respect the law more so? Will do less? I onder how much Salvia was ingested just because Miley was verbally raked over the coal. Probably pre-teens too, because we can't get the difference between minors and adults with free will through our thick heads. Regulate the sale - dont allow profitmaking off of children who shouldnt be making those kind of decisions. Yah, the drinking age too - 21. That makes sense. Out of high school and nowhere socially accepted to socialize until you are a senior. Oh wait, thats not true. No college students abide by that law. Instead, they exersize their freedom, knowing how rude the law is, and all become criminals because they have a few beers. You are making criminals out of otherwise good, smart people. If they are scum, they will do something illegal and then you can get 'em. You dont have to round up everyone else.Is it at alll possible tht you dont get it and might be wrong? Even if you are sticking to your moral convictions, the laws have been and are ineffctive, and countrproductive, raising a generation to scoff at the law because its stupid and wasting billions of dollars and precious lives.

These kids aren't going anywhere. They were good kids until they started smoking marijuana everyday instead of going to class. The boy, Dan, dropped out of Desmet and now has his life in ruins, gladly this happened so then it could possibly wake him from his drug haze he lives in. Sounds like natural selection to me. Which isn't a bad thing at all. If you're stupid enough to get caught you deserve to get in trouble.
