To the Mizzou Community: All of us strive to make the University of Missouri a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment and it saddens us when we see actions that hurt members of our community who may already feel marginalized. We expect all in our community to treat others with respect and dignity. Our published MU Statement of Values notes that “being responsible imposes the duty on us and our university to make decisions by acknowledging the context and considering the consequence, both intended and unintended, of any course of action.”
Last week The Maneater published a paper filled with articles that were thoughtless, disrespectful and hurtful to many in our community. It is not what we as a community stand for nor is it what we aspire to. Our institutional values, as part of our Statement of Values, are “mere words until we integrate them as values in our individual lives and reflect them in our … practices.”
The Maneater staff is taking responsibility for its actions. It is our responsibility as a community to work together to become a more civil and respectful Mizzou. My commitment is unwavering.
