Ra Ra Riot delivers an eclectic mix of synthesizers in their newest album "Beta Love." The band used to rely on some gorgeous string arrangements, making the synth sounds of "Beta Love" surprising, to say the least.
Luckily, though, the new direction of Ra Ra Riot shows great potential. "Dance With Me," which opens the album, is catchy but a bit expected. That's the thing with this album: it feels like something that has already been done by other bands.
This isn't to say that there aren't some great songs on "Beta Love." The album's title track, "Beta Love," is the height of the album with a beat that deserves to be blasted while driving or on a road trip.
It isn't until toward the end of the album that Ra Ra Riot mixes their roots in string instruments with their new synth pop sound. Unfortunately, most of the songs just don't resonate well and become forgetful. That being said, "For Once" gracefully reaches the perfect combination of string and synth.
Put simply, "Beta Love" has some great sounds, but it just doesn't seem original enough for Ra Ra Riot to abandon their roots.
