UPDATE: Columbia police seek two additional suspects in the Jan. 2 homicide of 23-year-old Dontay Tolston.

Jimiah A. Lambert, 20, of Columbia and Derrick Copelin, 17, of New Orleans, are not believed to be in the Columbia area at this time, according to a Columbia Police Department news release. They should be considered armed and dangerous, and anyone who comes in contact with them should contact local law enforcement or call 911.

Boone County Prosecutor Dan Knight has filed second-degree murder charges against the suspects. The Boone County Court has issued warrants with a bond amount of $1 million.

A 20-year-old man was arrested at 2 p.m. on Monday in connection to the homicide.

Columbia police detectives detained Martrell T. Smith at a Lawnridge Court residence for second-degree murder.

Smith did not resist arrest and was transported to a Columbia police precinct, where he is being held, Columbia Police Department spokesman Joseph Bernhard said.

Smith is listed as an inmate of Boone County Jail. His bond is $1 million.

Investigators revealed that Smith is suspected of using a handgun to shoot Tolston, but they have not released any additional information such as the number of shots fired and whether or not the suspect broke into Tolston’s home.

Tolston was shot late on Jan. 2 at his Newton Drive home and was pronounced dead at 4 a.m. on Jan. 3.

Other details, including the motive behind the crime and Smith’s relation to Tolston, are not yet available

“The investigation is ongoing and we cannot release information that would compromise the investigation,” Bernhard said. “I can tell you that (the investigators) are following up on all leads possible and are moving forward with the investigation. But it is hard to predict when it will be done because each case is unique.”

Investigators will release new information as soon as it can be released, Bernhard said.
