The Missouri Students Association/Graduate Professional Council Craft Studio celebrated 40 years on MU’s campus with a birthday party Thursday.

The celebration, which was held in the studio, included free birthday cake, free snacks, music and the opportunity for visitors to enter a raffle. Winners of the raffle, which will be announced Oct. 4 via email, will receive prizes such as retro buttons, handmade tote bags, ceramic mugs, waived pottery workshop fee or a special 40th birthday Craft Studio T-shirt.

During its 40-year presence on MU’s campus, the Craft Studio has provided students with a creative outlet, Craft Studio Student Manager Karen Rodriguez said.

“For me, the studio is not only the place that I work, it’s an escape,” Rodriguez said. “You don’t have to be an artist to come here.”

The studio’s mission is to provide students opportunities to explore arts and crafts in a recreational and casual environment, [according to its website.](http://craftstudio.org/about/mission/)

The Craft Studio offers three-week and five-week classes in a variety of mediums and skill levels, ranging from pottery to jewelry making. MU students, faculty and staff can take these classes for a reduced fee, and these classes are also open to the public for a higher fee.

In addition to its longer classes, the studio also offers “Free Crafternoons” every Friday, as well as Saturday workshops. The crafternoons are free with a student ID, and the Saturday workshops require a small fee.

Experienced artists and crafters can also purchase a Craft Studio membership. This provides them with a space to practice their respective craft or art form. Members have access to equipment, tools and supplies that they can use in their projects.

Graduate student Jessica Dean said she found out about the Craft Studio from a fellow veterinary student. Dean participated in the tie-dye crafternoon a few weeks ago, and recently signed up for a pottery workshop.

“I think it’s a good idea to have something different to do during the day (other than classes), and I like having access to tools and resources,” Dean said.
