The Cardigang, a comedy sketch and improvisation group, gave students a break from studying and gave them time to unwind with their performance Thursday night in The Shack.

The performance, called Magically Delirious‚ is made up of eight different sketches. The nearly 50 students who attended were laughing throughout the performance.

“I thought it was absolutely hilarious‚” freshman Bryndon Minter said. “It amazed me how they could think so quickly on their feet. They really did an awesome job.”

The group is made up of seven students who are a part of MUsketch and MU Improv, two student organizations dedicated to bringing comedy to MU students.

“When we were in the creative developing process, everyone seemed stuck on the fact that I wear cardigans all of the time,” junior MUsketch President Dillon Cassidy said. “We thought it would be a funny idea if we called ourselves the Cardigang and all wore cardigan sweaters.”

The sketches included schizophrenic restaurant-goers, stuffed animals come to life and an advice-giving sorority girl who couldn’t seem to answer the audience’s questions or stay on topic.

“My favorite was Sally Jenkin’s advice corner,” Minter said. “(The actor who performed Sally) did a really believable accent. It was a very funny and original character.”

Another sketch included how America’s founding fathers would have acted if they were fraternity brothers writing the Declaration of Independence in their fraternity house, with George Washington as a pledge who knocked his teeth out doing a keg stand.

Although the sketches had everyone in attendance enjoying themselves for the whole performance, Cassidy said his favorite part of the performance was behind the scenes.

“I think I actually preferred writing the sketches more than I did performing them,” Cassidy said. “It’s fun to act things out and make people laugh, but the process getting there is so much fun and we have such a good time with it.”

Instead of passing out flyers to promote their performance, the Cardigang performed parts of their sketch show to various audiences around campus, showing just how fun and entertaining the performance would be.

“We did some publicity today by singing one of the songs in a sketch in the middle of the student center and Speakers Circle,” Cassidy said. “I hope people came to see the show because they like sketch comedy. It’s also a good way to unwind.”

After the event, students who attended were encouraged to watch out for future performances put on by MU Improv next semester and were asked to support local comedians and comedy clubs on Thursday nights.

“Sketch comedy seems to be on the rise,” Cassidy said. “I think people are starting to realize that it’s a lot of fun to watch and it’s a fun way to interact with performers and get a chance to relax.”

The Cardigang will be performing at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights in the MU Student Center.
