Paramore – ‘Paramore’: 4 out of 5 stars
Apr. 16, 2013
Bands, like people, age and mature. Paramore is no exception. When the band first came together, lead singer Hayley Williams was only 16 years old. Now she is 24. In those eight years, the band has undergone some huge changes.
The biggest of these was two members leaving in 2010, including Josh Farro, who helped write most of the songs.
Paramore’s self-titled album is a collection of songs about Williams dealing with the split (although not mentioned explicitly) and learning to adapt to adulthood. “Ain’t It Fun” is dedicated to herself: “Ain’t it fun living in the real world/ Ain’t it good being all alone.”
However, not the entire album is about growing up. A high school girl-worthy love song entitled “Still Into You” is all sappy lyrics plus Paramore’s edgy sound.
The listener doesn’t need the lyrics to tell that the band is growing up. Its sound is changing, its music is changing and its members are changing. Some bands take a long time to mature, but Paramore has managed to do it in the time since its last album came out in 2009.
There’s still growing up to do for all involved, but "Paramore" should get listeners excited for what is to come from this band.
