Baseball team wins home openers

The baseball team finally got to play its doubleheader home opener Saturday, only to watch cold weather force the cancellation of two more scheduled games Sunday.

The games Saturday went well for the Tigers, as they beat Youngstown State by scores of 9-0 and 10-2. The team was led by junior catcher Brad Flanders, who went 5-for-5 on the day with a two-run home run, meaning he has had a hit in his last eight at-bats, including three homers.

MU scored four runs in the first inning of game one and added five in the fifth to make the game a blow-out. In the nightcap, the Tigers scored in each of the first four innings.

The Tigers received strong pitching performances in both games. Junior college transfer Andy Shipman shut the Penguins out on four hits in the first game and sophomore Justin James allowed only three hits and struck out 10 in seven innings pitched in the second game.
