Big 12 track and field crowns three Tigers
Mar. 04, 2003
Three Tigers went home champion despite a fourth-place finish by the men's track and field team at the Big 12 Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday in Lincoln, Neb., and a seventh-place finish for the women.
Seniors Christian Cantwell, Knut Sommerfeldt and Fiona Asigbee all took home individual titles in the weight throw, heptathlon and pentathlon, respectively.
For Cantwell, it was his fourth career Big 12 title but his first in the weight throw. In the shot put, where he has his other three titles, Cantwell was defeated by Nebraska's Carl Myerscough by more than four feet.
Sommerfeldt took home his third Big 12 title, all in the heptathlon, and Asigbee, who set a personal record in three of the pentathlon's five events, won her first.
Besides Cantwell in the shot put, Tigers who finished second were Amanda Bales in the mile run, Timothy Dunne in the 1000-meter run and Russ Bell in the weight throw.
The Tigers will be in action this weekend in Ames, Iowa at the NCAA qualifier.
