After losing both games against Illinois last season, Missouri gave Illinois a taste of their own medicine on Tuesday.
Missouri (23-16, 6-6) swept the doubleheader against Illinois (24-13, 4-5), winning the first game 2-0 and the second 3-2. The Tigers lead the all-time series 10-3.
In game one, redshirt senior Madi Norman picked up right where she left off. After pitching a no-hitter on Sunday, she pitched seven scoreless innings and striking out four. With the win, she increased her record to 11-7 on the year.
Sophomore Hatti Moore continued her breakout season with three hits and three RBIs in the doubleheader. She already has more than doubled her hit, RBI and home run total from last season. Her batting average has also jumped from .174 to .312 this year.
Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when Moore singled to drive in sophomore Abby George. The Tigers added another when Moore knocked in senior Regan Nash with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. Norman retired the Illini in order in the sixth and seventh to secure the victory.
In game two, Missouri fell behind early after Illinois scored on an RBI single in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Brooke Wilmes evened the game in the third inning with a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Moore singled, giving Missouri a 2-1 lead.
Illinois would later tie the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout.
Redshirt freshman Kendyll Bailey began a seventh inning rally with a double to center field. Missouri regained the lead on Wilmes’ second sacrifice fly of the game.
Sophomore Cassie Gasper pitched six innings and allowed two runs in the ballgame. Nash had three hits in the win and junior Eli Daniel picked up her fourth save of the year. Both Tiger pitchers were able to limit the damage done as Illinois had a runner in scoring position in six out of seven innings.
MU will head to Oxford, Mississippi for a three game set against the Rebels this afternoon. .
