Three Tigers win Big 12 track and field championships
Mar. 03, 2003
At the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday in Lincoln, Neb., three MU athletes won conference titles, but in the team competition, the men's team finished fourth and the women finished seventh.
On Friday, Christian Cantwell won the weight throw title with a personal-best throw of 69 feet, 11 inches, beating out teammate Russ Bell's 68 feet, 4.25 inches, which was good enough for second place.
Cantwell also finished second in the shot put Saturday, while Bell took third. Knut Sommerfeldt won the men's team's other gold medal in the heptathlon.
Cantwell's defeat in the shot put, at the hands of Nebraska's Carl Myerscough, came in a highly anticipated event. Myerscough won by more than four feet.
For the women's team, Fiona Asigbee won her first Big 12 championship in the pentathlon, while Amanda Bales took second in the mile run.
Both the Tiger men's and women's teams will be in action starting Friday in Ames, Iowa, at the NCAA Qualifying Meet.
